Does your child have difficulty making friends or joining groups of kids on the playground?  Maybe he/she has a hard time empathizing or taking the perspective of others?  This can lead to frustration and anxiety because these children cannot monitor and respond to social cues like their neuro-typical peers. Unfortunately, some children are not born with the innate ability to adapt behaviors based on the situation and what they know about the people in it.  This can affect a child's social emotional well being as well as their academics.  Our state standards do not always line up with our neurology. MA standards require children to "interpret the speaker's verbal and non-verbal message/purpose/perspective" and to "determine causes for character's actions".  Some children need to be explicitly taught these skills.  At The Speech Circle, we used evidence based practices to teach social communication. Intervention is individualized to each child for their specific needs.
